I was excited browsing my new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic “tube” phone and knowing that I can download so many apps makes me restless only to be stopped by “Expired Certificate” error message, therefore I cannot download the apps available to my touch screen phone. This could not be!
So I set it aside and start searching for guides and workaround through this bug. Luckily I found out that here are some troubleshooting available, with this kind of phone of course we need support.
One is, some suggested to change your phone’s country and date settings to an earlier date and time and install the Nokia 5800 XM applications again and see if it works. Sometimes it does, but not for me.
Two, try to update your firmware if is is not the latest version yet. This can be done by upgrading through Nokia PC Suite or Firmware over the Air (FOTA) using data. Some countries don’t have the latest version upgrade available yet, so try step 3.
Three, the fix I found was resetting your handset.
1. The first step is to make your backup for the phone memory data using the Nokia PC Suite 7.1. You can also make a backup to the micro SD card through the phone’s file manager. I prefer the PC Suite though because it is safe in case the SD card gets damaged. (this step is very important especially before doing any major change.)
2. After the backup has been done, remove your Micro SD card from your mobile by pressing the power key once and selecting “remove E:Memory card” or you can directly turn off the phone.
3. Then also remove your SIM card. (very important!)
4. Turn the power key back on and format your phone memory by pressing *#7370# and enter the unlock code which is 12345 by default, unless changed.
5. After formatting Nokia 5800 XM will power back on in a minute, all your previous data will be lost, but you have a backup don’t you?
6. Select your country region and the current time and turn off the phone.
7. And then you can put the Micro SD card back and power on the phone.
8. Now you can try to install any signed apps to your Nokia 5800 XM phone, without the SIM card inside yet, phone set to offline mode.
9. After installation you can power off the phone and insert your SIM Card back, switch the phone on and install yet another handy apps.
It worked! I was relieved. So you can download apps to your Nokia 5800 phone without the “expired certificate” message anymore.
